September 2026

A great first session bringing together Johnny Hunter on drumkit and percussion, Gayle Brogan on viola and electronics, Hervé Perez on alto and soprano saxophones, Gill Whiteley on piano and viola and Geoff Bright on bass saxophone. Listen here for a 10 mins extract (recorded and mixed by Hervé)

Yes, we did get some video but…er…failed completely to record the discussion…we’ve got to learn…tech is not our strong point! Unfortunately, the video chopped off our two wonderful guest players Johnny Hunter and Gayle Brogan (sorry folks!)

Here’s a few words from Geoff (above) introducing the Afternoon Shift at Shirley’s project…

We are hoping this project becomes a kind of community of practice, if anybody knows that kind of phrase… a community of friends, a community of invention… and a laboratory community…so that’s the spirit of it…  so thanks all you guys for coming in and filling the place when we expected it to be empty!…

Some comments below…
A wonderful afternoon of improvisation, in depth discussion and human connection. Breaking down the boundaries between audience and performance after only one session! – Liam

Thanks for today. You found the edge of chaos and we lived to tell the tale…way out and way beyond our expectations – Nick & Joanne

I think what you’re doing with these events is really wonderful and much needed. I was really energised after the performance and discussion, I could have stayed much longer. It makes me realise how little opportunity there is to discuss improv with improvisers in this way-Moss

The session was great fun and interesting too – Hervé
